This month Patrick's latest CD recording 'Desire' has been released on the Passacaille Label (PAS956). Baroque Ensemble Il Gardellino conducted by Marcel Ponseele performs sacred cantatas from the Bach family, all cantatas deal with grief and sorrow. The best-known piece on this affecting CD is Johann Christoph Bach's lamento 'Ach, dass ich Wassers G'nug hätte' for alto. Patrick Van Goethem discloses many subtle nuances in his haunting beautiful singing, while the rich instrumental playing is full of imagination. One can literally feel the grief and emotion.
By the end of the month, on 21 August, Patrick will perform in the Basilika Church of the Monastery Eberbach (Germany) during the Rheingau-Musik Festival. He performs two of the most beautiful compositions from the immense repertoire of Johann Sebastian Bach: Magnificat BWV 243 and Easter Oratorio BWV 249.
Bach's Magnificat in D is written in Latin and demonstrates Bach's feeling for grandeur, it has heroic and soft innocent moments in one piece. The softness comes from the duet written for alto and tenor 'Et misericordia'. It is a lovely pastoral movement, delicately rendered by flutes and strings. In the alto aria 'Esurientes' Bach's use of the flutes with the alto solo gives this music a child-like innocence.
The Easter Oratorio, also known as 'Kommt eilet und laufet' is simply one of the most glorious pieces of music ever written by Bach. The alto aria 'Saget, saget mir geschwinde' is a highlight and far from soft and innocent. It is a very fast sung aria. Patrick Van Goethem recorded this oratorio earlier with Masaaki Suzuki's Bach Collegium Japan (BIS 1561).

Meest bekende stuk op deze aantrekkelijke CD is Johann Christoph Bach's lamento 'Ach, dass ich Wassers G'nug hätte' voor alto. Patrick Van Goethem brengt subtiele nuances aan in zijn aangrijpend mooie interpretatie, terwijl de rijke instrumentatie vol verbeelding is. Men voelt letterlijk de pijn en emotie.
